Regrets on today's WOMR Fliegende Hollaender

[from Geof. Riggs; not Eliz. H., my better half]

-- Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollaender, with Mark Delevan, Stephen Milling, Jane Eaglen, Thomas Studebaker, Erik Cutler and Jill Grove, San Francisco Chorus and Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas

Regrettably, this highly attractive-looking Hollaender on WOMR cannot be accessed today. WOMR's audio stream will be down for a few days, and the only guarantee from them is that the stream will be back up in time for next week's Saturday offering.

I was particularly looking forward to this item, and I share the keen disappointment of (I'm sure) many here at not being able to hear it.

[from Geof. Riggs; not Eliz. H., my better half]

To all --

As I recall, quite recently, an astounding discovery was made of either an original manuscript or original parts for Offenbach's Contes d'Hoffmann. This was as recently as this very year, I believe.

Today (Saturday!), Radio Tre is webcasting at GMT 1800/EDT 2:00PM today(!!) a Teatro degli Arcimboldi di Milano performance of Hoffmann taped on the 18th of this month, featuring Brandon Jovanovich and conducted by Gary Bertini. Might anyone here know someone who might know or some way of ascertaining if this brand new production (by Alfredo Arias) incorporates the discoveries in these newly uncovered manuscript materials -- or adopts wholesale the version of the opera reflected in this new material?

Radio Tre's audio streaming of this performance can be accessed at the GMT 1800/EDT 2:00PM slot under Radio Tre at

Time is rather short here (my fault for not posting earlier), since a quite remarkable-looking Prince Igor is starting at GMT 1730/EDT 1:30PM, and I would only be interested in switching over to Hoffmann at GMT 1800/EDT 2:00PM if discoveries from the new ms. materials are indeed incorporated in the Teatro degli Arcimboldi di Milano production.

Please, does anyone know or have a way of finding out the answer to this question soon? (BTW, even if someone may have the answer to this question eventually at a later point, I'd still be interested in knowing the answer at any time, since this item may be repeated on other stations later.)

P.S.: Unfortunately, both Radio Clasica de Espana and Radio Stephansdom are encountering problems in their streams: Radio Clasica de Espana's actual signal seems to be somewhat distorted and Radio Stephansdom's perfectly viable signal is encumbered with a distinct hum. Candidly, we hold out better hope for RCdE's stream in the near term than we do for RS's hum. Stay tuned, to coin a phrase.........

Saturday, October 16th

Some of the more special offerings this afternoon are highlighted not just by Hayashi and Tucker in LA JUIVE (see previous posting) but by

URGENT ALERT! Saturday, Oct. 16th

Before providing a brief lineup for Saturday, October 16th:

Starting right NOW -- GMT 1700/EDT 1:00PM -- is a piece of opera history at

KCSC -- HALEVY: La Juive. Richard Tucker, Yasuko Hayashi, David Gwynne; Anton Guadagno, cond. (Opera d'Oro 1333)

This is a rarely heard performance, and it is also rare to hear a tenor who can take on the daunting role of Eleazar in the first place being matched by an apt partner -- in this case, Yasuko Hayashi -- in her genuine artistry and stamina delivering a heartfelt and vocally assured Rachel. This is one of those rare "live" recordings with a true sense of occasion!

Don't miss it!
