Offerings for Saturday, August 26, 2006

The tossup question for today is "exactly what will NPR World of Opera being broadcasting this afternoon?" (It was a big tossup last week, but we didn't know that until fairly late in the game last Saturday.) Someone apparently goofed at NPR - or they didn't know the difference between Paisiello's Barber of Seville, which had been broadcast the week before, and Rossini's, which was supposed to be the opera broadcast last week. So we eagerly await what happens this afternoon. All the schedule listings, both at the NPR site and on those individual station sites that give such detailed info, are still listing the Houston Grand Opera performance of Handel's Julius Caesar with David Daniels and Laura Claycomb for today, but we will try to keep you abreast of what's really happening.

Now onto more interesting matters - Bayreuth rebroadcasts:

Die Walküre - KAMU, WABE and WICR

Siegfried - KUHF, KWAX, WFIU, WWFM and WRTI

Bartok Radio, Bayern 4 Klassik, Latvia Radio Klasika, Musiq3, Radio Oesterreich International, Radio Slovinia Tretji and Radio Tre (RAI) - From this season's Salzburg Festival, Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera, with John Mark, Ruxandra Donose, Véronique Gens, John Graham Hall, Alexandra Reinprecht, Markus Werba and Adriana Kucerova, conducted by Ivor Bolton.

NRK Alltid Klassisk and NRK P2 (note that the two stations start this at different times) - From last season's Proms, a performance of Verdi's Requiem from the Royal Albert Hall with Barbara Frittoli, Daniela Barcellona, Giuseppe Filianoti, and Ferruccio Furlanetto, BBC Symphony Chorus, City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda.

WOMR - From the Opera Stage/European Opera Series (from WFMT), a Vienna Staatsoper performance of Mozart's Idomeneo with Neil Shicoff, Angelika Kirchschlager, Genia Kühmeier and Barbara Frittoli, conducted by Seiji Ozawa.

Sveriges Radio P2 - A 2003 performance from the Royal Albert Hall of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, with Sarah Connolly, Christopher Purves, Carolyn Sampson, D'Arcy Bleiker,
Anna Dennis , Elizabeth Cragg, Matthew Beale and Lucy Crowe, conducted by Richard Egarr.

That hits the high spots for this afternoon.

Among other items of interest, Espace 2 continues its survey of all the Mozart operas from this season's Salzburg Festival every weekday through the first week of September - this weeks' offerings are: La Finta Semplice (Monday), La Clemenza de Tito (Tuesday), Cosi fan tutte (Wednesday), Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail (Thursday) and The Magic Flute (Friday).

Happy listening,
