Saturday Highlights - 9/8/07

As one might expect, many stations have already begun to program special appreciations of the late Luciano Pavarotti. We have tried to keep track of these developments, but be prepared for late programming changes as more stations add Pavarotti programming...

A slew of stations will be carrying the Last Night of the Proms, live from London's Royal Albert Hall, with Anna Netrebko, Joshua Bell and the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jiri Belohlavek.

NPR World of Opera will be airing a performance from Washington National Opera of Nicholas Maw's opera, Sophie's Choice, with Angelica Kirschlager, Rod Gilfry, Gordon Gietz, Corey Evan Rotz, Clayton Brainerd, Erin Elizabeth Smith and Trevor Scheunemann, conducted by Marin Alsop.

Those stations on the WFMT network will be carrying Gounod's Faust from Houston Grand Opera, starring William Burden, Samuel Ramey, Tamar Iveri, Earle Patriarco and Marie Lenormand, conducted by Sebastian Lang-Lessing.

Other highlights for this aftenoon:

Already underway - LRT, in honor of Pavarotti, is carrying his 1979 recording of Verdi's La Traviata with Joan SUtherland, conducted by Richard Bonynge; and NRK Alltid Klassisk is airing Act 3 of Wagner's Die Walkure from this year's Bayreuth Festival.

Deutschladradio Kultur - From Opéra Royal de Wallonie Liège, a June perfromance of Boito's Mefistofele, with Barbara Haveman, Paata Burchuladze, Antonello Palombi, Guy Gabelle, Christine Solhosse and Tiziana Catarro, conducted by Patrick Davin.

DR P2 - From Barokfestival Herne, a perfromance of Fux's Julo Ascanio, re d'Alba, with Radu Marian, Maria Cristina Kiehr, Markus Forster, Daniel Johannsen and Andreas Lebeda, conducted by Gunar Letzbor.

Espace 2 - From Geneva, an August performance of Hugo Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch, with Stefanie Iranyi, soprano, Roderick Williams, baryton and Helmut Deutsch, piano.

WQXR - A Houston Grand Opera perfromance of Janacek's Cunning Little Vixen, with Lisa Saffer, Fiona Murphy, Hector Vasquez, Bradley Garvin, Jon Kolbet and Liam Bonner, conducted by Patrick Summers.

CBC Two - From Vienna State Opera, a performance of Verdi's I Vespri Siciliani, with Leo Nucci, Francisco Casanova, Robert Scandiuzzi and Sondra Radvanovsky, conducted by Fabio Luisi.

Cesky Rozhlas 3-Vltava - From Covent Garden, a performance of Bizet's Carmen, with Jonas Kaufmann, Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, Jean Sébastien Bou, Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Matthew Rose, Jacques Imbrailo, Anna Caterina Antonacci and Nora Amsellem, conducted by Antonio Pappano.

Espace Musique -A special Appreciation of Luciano Pavarotti (La Fille du Regiment with Joan Sutherland).

KCME - Wagner's Tannhäuser, with Peter Seiffert, Petra Maria Schnitzer, Franz-Josef Selig, Martin Gantner and Lioba Braun, conducted by James Conlon.

KUHF - NPR World of Opera - Massenet's Werther from Vienna State Opera, with Neil Shicoff, Vesselina Kasarova, Laura Tatulescu, Adrian Eröd, Alfred Sramek, Benedikt Kobel and Clemens Unterreiner, conducted by MArco Armiliato.

NRK Alltid Klassisk & NRK P2 - From La Scala, Milan, a performance of Verdi's La Travaiata, with Angela Gheorghiu, Ramon Vargas and Roberto Frontali.

Sveriges Radio P2 - From the 2006 Salzburg Festival, Mozart's oratorio, Det befriade Baityloua, with Marjana Mijanovic, Franz-Josef Selig, Rainer Trost, Julia Kleiter, Irena Bespalovaite and Jennifer Johnston, conducted by Christoph Poppen.

WCNY - A tribute to Beverly Sills (A 1970 recording of Massenet's Manon).

WOMR - after airing the Houston Grand Opera Faust, Part I of a Tribute to Luciano Pavarotti.
