Oy! After the Met ...It's a New Season!! Gadzooks!!!

The week following the end of the Met broadcast season is always a hectic one for us grunts at OperaCast. We have to figure out what the 70-plus stations that carry the Met have decided to do for the next few months until December when the Met starts its next season.

It used to be pretty simple - the U.S. stations either carried no opera, had their own opera show or carried NPR World of Opera. But NPR will have some stiff competition this year, as WFMT's opera network now has an impressive lineup to cover the months when the Met is not on the air. Lyric Opera of Chicago is back on the air (today with Turandot), and ten stations (so far) are carrying it. KUSC is beginning an eleven week season of broadcasts from LA Opera (today's offering is Traviata with Fleming and Villazón). In July, WFMT will pick up eight of the LA Opera broadcasts for syndication on its network, followed by several weeks of Houston Grand Opera and then eight weeks of San Francisco Opera. Today five stations are airing the Met National Council Auditions Finals Concert, but who knows (yet) what they will all be carrying next week? And then there are the 15 stations who still have not announced what comes next (their schedule pages still list the Met for this afternoon!) So I will be listening feverishly at around 1:30 this afternoon to see what those stations are doing. Oy!

In addition to all this State-side activity, there are some wonderful things to listen to elsewhere this afternoon. A couple of European stations are catching up on Met broadcasts they missed the first time around (if you missed Simon Boccanegra or Il Trittico, you're in luck!). Swedish Radio is celebrating Elisabeth Söderstrom's 80th Birthday with enticing live rarities from early in her career (I never knew she sang Butterfly, did you?). BBC Radio 3 is featuring Handel's Aggripina, starring Sarah Connolly. Norwegian Radio is rebroadcasting the La Scala Opening Night Aida from this past December.

Here's the live lineup:

  • Deutschlandradio Kultur - The Met broadcast of Il Trittico; Il Tabarro with Maria Guleghina, Salvatore Licita and Juan Pons; Suor Angelica with Barbara Frittoli, Heidi Grant Murphy and Stephanie Blythe (who also appears to wonderful effect in the other two opera!); and Gianni Schicchi with Olga Mykytenko, Massimo Giordano and Alessandro Corbelli, all conducted by James Levine.
  • DR P2 - From the Kongelige Teater, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, with Inger Dam-Jensen, John Lundgren, Niels Jørgen Riis, Bo Kristian Jensen, Christian Christiansen, Andrea Pellegrini and Thomas Poulsen Kragh, conducted by Giancarlo Andretta.
  • DR P2 Klassisk - A concert featuring Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder and Act 2 of Tristan und Isolde, with Eva Johansson, Robert Dean Smith, Randi Stene and Attila Jun, the DR Radiosymfoniorkester conducted by Marc Albrecht.
